This page explains how ordering durable medical equipment and supplies through our insurance portal works, so you know what to expect before you submit a request. Please read it — it answers the most common questions and may save you a phone call.

A prescription alone does not guarantee you will receive an item. A doctor's order is only the first step. Whether we can provide a product depends on your insurance and on availability, as explained below.
Does a prescription guarantee I'll get my equipment?

No. A doctor's order is the first step, but whether we can provide an item also depends on:

  • Insurance eligibility — your plan must be active and the item a covered benefit on the date of service.
  • Your plan's coverage rules — medical-necessity criteria, quantity/frequency limits, and prior-authorization, which vary by plan.
  • "Same or similar" history — if you already received the same or a similar item within the insurer's reuse window (e.g. a wheelchair or walker in the last five years), a replacement may be denied.
  • Required documentation — many items need a detailed written order, chart notes, a face-to-face evaluation, or a Certificate of Medical Necessity.
  • Whether we carry or can source it, and current stock/availability.
What products don't you carry?

We currently do not carry:

  • Diabetic supplies (including test strips and related items)
  • Syringes and injectables
  • Wound care supplies
  • Ostomy supplies

Orthopedic supplies and braces: we provide these for Medicaid plans only. We are not a contracted Medicare supplier for this category (we were not awarded the Medicare competitive-bid contract), so we cannot bill Medicare for orthopedic items.

Do I need a prescription for oxygen?
  • Yes. Under Illinois and federal law, medical oxygen is a prescription item — this applies to both insurance and self-pay.
  • We do not deliver oxygen tanks on their own.
  • If you need oxygen, we provide an oxygen concentrator on a rental basis (with a valid prescription), along with the supplies to use it.
How do rentals work — and when do I return them?

Certain items are provided as rentals, not sales — including hospital beds, wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, Hoyer (patient) lifts, and oxygen concentrators. We deliver and set up rental equipment; call (773) 205-6993 for rental pricing and terms.

Please tell us right away if the patient moves to a long-term care facility, hospital, or nursing home, or passes away. Rental equipment must be returned and we will arrange pickup. A caregiver or family member should notify us as soon as possible at (773) 205-6993.
What happens after I submit a request?
  • You submit your item(s), insurance, and prescribing provider through this portal.
  • Our team verifies eligibility and coverage and gathers any required documentation from your provider.
  • We obtain prior authorization where the plan requires it.
  • Once approved, we arrange delivery. If an item isn't covered, can't be approved, or isn't something we carry, we'll contact you to discuss options — including self-pay where available.
Can I just pay out of pocket?

Yes — many everyday items are available for self-pay purchase on our online store at store.newmedsupplies.com, with no insurance or prescription needed to buy. Store purchases are self-pay and are not billed to insurance.
